“Who Told You That?”

Most children aren’t any good with coming up with quick answers when they are caught doing something they shouldn’t.  Oftentimes, rather than giving you their well-thought-out response, they will ask, “Who told you that?”  Part of them wants to know who tattled.  But in their own way, they are trying to stall a bit.  (Humph!  Come to think of it, I have a sister who still reacts that way.)

Listening to Bishop T. D. Jakes, I got a different perspective on that question.  So, I ask you, “Who told you that?”  Not talking about what you may or may not have done, but about who you believe yourself to be.  The Word tells us that we are somebody!  God calls us saints (Ephesians 2:19).  He declares that we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37).  He said that we are holy (I Peter 2:9), righteous (II Corinthians 5:21), and sanctified (I Corinthians 6:11).  Jesus came so that we could have and live abundant lives (John 10:10).

In spite of all that God says about us, many of us live our lives with defeated attitudes, as though we don’t believe His report.  We act like Adam in the Garden after his sin, when he became “aware” and realized that he was naked.  Because of sin, he was suddenly ashamed and unable to face God.  When God called him, “… he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.  And He (God) said, “Who told you that you were naked?...” (Genesis 3:10 – 11).

Adam’s sin caused him – and us – to be separated from God, but the blood of Jesus has restored our fellowship.  It has given us the right to claim all the blessings of God.  Why aren’t we?  Why are so many believers living like the world, afraid, distressed, and depressed?  Is it because sin has caused us to “hide” ourselves from God?  Could it be that we don’t think ourselves worthy of God’s love and favor?  Who told you that?   Who told you that you would never amount to anything?  Who told you that you are just a “sinner trying to make it in”?  Who told you that you would always be broke?  Who told you that no one would ever love you?  Who told you that?

You know the answers, but what are you going to do about it?  You know that Satan is a liar, and the father of lies.  You know that he wants to make you doubt God.  So – whose report will you believe?  To live life abundantly begins with God.  “God is who He says He is.  God can do what He says He can do.  I am who God says I am.  I can do all things through Christ.  God's Word is alive and active in me.[1]”  Now, who told you that???

37: Although they had seen Jesus perform so many miracles, they wouldn’t believe in Him.

38: In this way the words of the prophet Isaiah came true:

“Lord, who has believed our message?

To whom has the Lord’s power been revealed?”

39: So the people couldn’t believe because, as Isaiah also said,

40: “God blinded them and made them close-minded

so that their eyes don’t see and their minds don’t understand.

And they never turn to me for healing!”

41: Isaiah said this because he had seen Jesus’ glory and had spoken about Him.

John 12 (God’s Word Translation)

Father, thank You for the perfection of Your Word.  Your Word is truth.  Your Word is life.  In Your Word we find Your perfect will for our lives.  So, we pray and ask that You help us to stand in absolute faith and confidence in Your Word, which is the key to our having and being all that You said we could have and be.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Something to think about:

“Faith means belief in something concerning which

doubt is theoretically possible.”

(William James)

Be blessed in the Lord!
